This “IGAD-ASIGN” application is madeavailableto facilitate citizen contributions towards Disaster RiskReduction(DRR) and IGAD’s work in this domain. Photos provided byvolunteersare used by IGAD to document local risks andsuccessfulrisk-reduction work. The photos can also be used asfieldvalidation of IGAD, UNOSAT, RCMRD and other partners’satelliteimage analyses, thus contributing to accurate andefficient DRRsolutions. Images provided by citizens will helpvulnerablecountries in the region to make better and fasterdecisions forDRR.Seconds after you send a geo-picture it will be available inamap at the receiver side. Selected images and data providedviathis application will be integrated into professionalon-linemapping portals and may be made available to the public. Thephotosare automatically time-stamped and geo-referenced(geo-pictures).GPS is most precise, but basically only worksoutdoors, hence theIGAD-ASIGN solution also includes positioningvia cellular andWi-Fi networks. Your inputis being received at am IGAD server for reviewand possible actionto improve local DRR.Contributors by definition will allow use of the images anddatafor non-commercial purposes by IGAD related to managingDisasterRisk Reduction related activities.Photos are compressed significantly to save time, costandbandwidth, but higher resolution parts can beautomaticallyrequested later if needed, in which case thephoto-provider isnotified with an SMS if the phone number isproperly registered.Please note how this is done.As a user of this application you will also be able to log intothe IGAD-ASIGN server and view your own photos.IGAD-ASIGN has been developed by AnsuR, based on ASIGN fromtheEuropean Project GEO-PICTURES, and is being operatedincollaboration with UNITAR-UNOSAT. This application is asimplifiedversion of ASIGN. A professional tool for disastermanagers, civilprotection officers and early responders is alsoavailable.
